Small Town Americana Music: zo wordt de muziek van Wilson’s Reservoir, een Amerikaanse band die een fraaie cd heeft uitgebracht (de titel is gewoon Wilson’s Reservoir…) en onlangs hebben getoerd in Europa, omschreven.

The Wilson’s Reservoir schuwt het grote gebaar niet. Dat vind je terug in muziek en vooral in de zang. In de basis is dit Americana maar de benadering is vaak “groots” en met “groots” bedoel ik dat het maar zelden “klein” wordt gehouden. Is dit nog te volgen? Nee? Misschien helpt het om te zeggen dat de donker getinte Americana regelmatig uitmondt in overtuigende en excessief gespeelde (rock)muziek.

Voeg daarbij dat je met een zanger te maken hebt met een vocale attitude à la Bono en je weet wel ongeveer hoe laat het is. Persoonlijk vind ik de stem van Ben Wilson, de zanger, gitarist, songwriter en grote man achter Wilson’s Reservoir prachtig, maar dat komt omdat hij sterke gelijkenissen vertoont met het stemgeluid van de zanger van de The Veils, Finn Andrews. Laatstgenoemde heeft in mijn ogen één van de fraaiste rockstemmen van dit moment.

De uitstekende zang gekoppeld aan een elftal prima songs, die zogezegd mooi donker kleuren, maakt deze cd zeer de moeite waard. Het openingsnummer “Bullets” zet de toon, waarbij je eigenlijk meteen niet meer om Ben Wilson heen kan. Tenminste, als je dat al zou willen want muziekliefhebbers die vooral van “intieme en breekbare” Americana houden raad ik aan eerst te luisteren voordat zij tot koop overgaan. Want “intiem en breekbaar” zijn geen bewoordingen die echt bij Wilson’s Reservoir passen.

Het enige nummer dat voor mij uit de toon valt is de afsluiter “Lemons in the water” dat een luchtigheid laat zien die mijn inziens niet past op dit album. Voor de rest heeft mij deze cd overtuigd en zou het mij niet verbazen als deze band, gelet op die “grootse” benadering, in de toekomst op grotere festivals te bewonderen valt. “Small Town Americana Music” op een groot festival: het zou een welkome aanvulling zijn.
