Remember that review written in Dutch?
Do you remember that review on the Johnny’s Garden website, that was originally in Dutch? We posted a (really) quick and dirty translation of it when we got it. Now, courtesy to Maarten Poiesz, we have a really awesome translation!
People describe the music of Wilson’s Reservoir – a band which has just brought out a fine cd and toured around Europe - as Small Town Americana Music.
Wilson’s Reservoir is not afraid of big gestures, which is shown in the music and mainly the vocals. It is essentially Americana, but their approach is often “big”, and with “big” I mean that they seldom keep things “small”. Is this still understandable? No? Suffice to say perhaps that the dark Americana regularly turns into convincing and excessively played (rock) music.
Add to this that we are dealing with a singer who has a Bono-style vocal attitude and you know just about what time it is. Personally, I find the vocals of Ben Wilson – singer, guitarist, songwriter and main guy behind Wilson’s Reservoir – amazing, but this is because he shows strong similarities to the vocal sound of Finn Andrews, singer of The Veils. The latter, in my view, has one the finest voices in rock music today.
The excellent vocals in combination with 11 great songs, that color nicely dark so to speak, make this cd very worthwhile. Opening song “Bullets” sets the tone, which immediately makes it impossible to ignore Ben Wilson. As if that is something you might want to do in the first place, because for those music lovers who are into more “fragile and intimate” Americana I recommend to have a listen first before making the purchase. ”Fragile and intimate” are not the words that really go well with Wilson’s Reservoir.
The only song on the album that to me seems out of place is the last song “Lemons in the water“, which demonstrates light qualities that in my opinion don’t go with the rest of the songs. Apart from that, this cd has convinced me and I wouldn’t be surprised to find them, with their “big” approach, playing at some of the bigger festivals in the future. “Small Town Americana Music” at a big festival: it would be a welcome addition.

Texas Exile Radio are cool: they play Wilson’s Reservoir
Texas Exile Radio is a radio managed by Padre Will. But let’s let them introduce themselves:
Produced by a native Texan from across the Atlantic, Texas Exile Radio twangs, shuffles, whines, and rocks 24 hours a day – just like Country radio’s s’posed to do. We’ve got your Texas Music, Red Dirt, Americana, Alt- & Indie Country. We’ve got Honky-Tonk, Bakersfield, Outlaw. We’ve got a touch of Southern Rock, and even a few songs from those rare Nashville types who still recall what Country music’s meant to sound like! Tune in to hear Texas artists, undiscovered talent, and your favourite classics. We’re Country radio like it oughta sound – but usually doesn’t. Give us a go; it beats the hell outta stuffin’ armadillos down yer pants!
Oh, yeh – we’re non-commercial, too. Music just sounds better that way.
And guess what? They added Wilson’s Reservoir to their playlist. And wrote a little something about the LP:
Wilson’s Resevoir sends us an eponymous, self-released album of alt-country music with hints of Appalachian flavour. The liner notes speak of lead guy Ben Wilson’s homeschool upbringing, which would normally set off a few alarm bells in my head, owing to the homeschool types I encountered back in Texas. But, here, if nowhere else, I’d have got things wrong. The album is, in fact, it is a very thoughtful (and darkly intense) piece of work which speaks from a Georgia background that I certainly recognise. Coolest track: “Lemons in the Water“.
The blurb about the LP is available on their blog.
Yet another review
Alejandro Carantoña is a Spanish journalist. He wrote a neat review of the “Wilson’s Reservoir” LP.
Deciding to compose, sing and create Folk nowadays might be due to two reasons: first, conviction; second, opportunism. Ben Wilson belongs to the first group, the ones that have drunk from old days acoustic guitars, overlapped with –his own story to tell- and finally has sprinkled his rare talent over them.
Wilson’s Reservoir introduces an extremely risky record, close to tightrope walking: it constantly swings from conventional to that kind of profound music that makes you shut down all your senses while listening.
Weird things happen in every track, brass blowing, drums, pedal steels, overdriven bass, surrounding Wilson’s voices and his nuances-plated 6 strings. We stride along with him, hand by hand, through every song, wherever he wants to take us. And at the same time, we reach without realizing, the heart of his melodies: from the guy sitting at the edge of his bed, notebook over his lap, to the grandeur of a perfectly rhythmic band bursting onto the room.

And… more press!
We’ve got more press. This review comes from the Netherlands, and was posted on the Johnny’s Garden website. The review was posted last Friday, July 9th and was done by Ed Muitjens.
Here’s a quick and online translation for the people (like me) that do not read Dutch:
Small Town Americana Music: thus the music of Wilson tank, an American link become which has brought out a fancy cd (the title is Wilson ordinary tank…) and recently have gone for a ride in Europe, defined.
The Wilson tank do not shun the large gesture. That retrieves you in music and especially in the song. In the basis this Americana are but the approach is frequently massive and with massive I mean that it is seldom kept but small. Is this follow still? No? Perhaps it helps to say that the dark getinte Americana end in regularly in convincing and excessively played (rock) music.
Joint thereby that with a warbler you to do have Bono and you with a vocal attitude à drawer knows, however, approximately how late it is. Personally I find the voice of am Wilson, the warbler, gitarist, songwriter and large man behind Wilson tank splendid, but that comes because he shows strong resemblances with the voice sound of the warbler of the The available, Finn Andrews. Last mentioned has one of the fancy rockstemmen of this moment in my eyes.
The excellent song to a elftal very well songs coupled, which colors zogezegd beautiful dark, makes this cd very worth it. The opening number Bullets puts the tone, where you are in fact immediately no longer for Wilson gone are possible. At least, if you that already would want because music devotees that loves especially intimate and fragile Americana Council I to firstly before to listen they proceed to buy. Because intimate and fragile is no formulation that is appropriate really at Wilson tank.
The only number which falls for me from the tone is the clincher Lemons in the water that luchtigheid shows which is not appropriate my inziens on this album. For the rest me has persuaded this cd and it me astonish as these a link, having regard to that massive approach, in the future on larger festivals be admired can. Small Town Americana Music on a large festival: it a welcome supplement would be.
It makes me laugh that Google Translate (or Babelfish, whatever) translated Wilson’s Reservoir as Wilson’s Tank, but oh well, it’s to give you an idea of what is being said about us. If you can do better, please let us know!
